Laws of composition 2

September 1, 2020

Law of exposure
This law deals with the effect of the "frame" on the composition of the image on the plane.

“We call composition of a pinting a plot on a plane within the borders of the“ frame,” says Nikolai Volkov in his work Composition in Painting. For example, an object located close to the "frame" gives the viewer the impression of lying in the plane of the "frame", and located in the central part of the picture - the impression of lying in depth.

Law of novelty
According to this law, art should always be a discovery depicting something new, surprising or unexpected.

“The composition should be not only informative and skillful, but also new. Art does not just capture what the artist sees in life. Art is the constant discovery of beauty in the ordinary. The ability to see new things in life and find an appropriate plastic form for it is the basis of innovation,” Kibrik writes. - A true innovator can only be a person who is open to the perception of the “new” in life, full of curiosity for this “new” and a passionate desire to approve this new, capturing it, drawing his attention to his contemporaries, and therefore his ideological essence is so important for the artist, his pathos. Skepticism, spiritual emptiness are creatively barren.”

A good example was given by Ascanio Condivi in the biography of the famous master of the Italian Renaissance: “Michelangelo had an amazing memory; having written so many thousands of figures, he never made one look like another or repeating the pose of another. I’ve even heard from him that he doesn’t draw a single line before he remembers and is convinced that he has never done such a thing, and destroys the one in which he does not find novelty. ”

The law of vitality
According to this law, in the works of art, which depicts the movement in time, the meaning of this movement must be conveyed. So the author can convey the vitality of the displayed.
“Both ourselves and the artist himself are in time, and the perception of nature and the image occur in time and should methodically take it into account. Thus, an image claiming to be artistic has the task of organizing, depicting time. This will take place when we depict a historical event, and when we depict a moving subject, and when we examine, feel and study a relatively motionless nature,” Vladimir Favorsky argues in the article “On Composition ”.
